SmartSimple Microsoft Outlook Synchronization - Troubleshooting
The SmartSimple Microsoft Outlook plug-in will log any errors to the Windows Event Viewer (assuming your desktop configuration will allow this). Access to the Windows Event Viewer varies with different versions of Microsoft Windows, but can usually be accessed by clicking on the Start button and typing "Event Viewer" into the Search box. The Outlook Plug-in events will be in the Windows Log named Application. The relevant entries will be from source outlook.
Authentication
- The most common cause of problems are incorrect login settings. Ensure your username is your full e-mail address, your password is correct, and your alias and URL are set correctly as described above. Always ensure you click the Validate button and that the green check mark appears as described above.
- Errors in the Event Viewer with the following content often mean you have incorrect settings:
- Object reference not set to an instance of an object
- Invalid URL: The hostname could not be parsed
- These errors can also be logged if you do not have an active connection to the Internet (i.e. if you are working off-line)
Note: if you change your password within the SmartSimple system you will also need to separately make the change in the Outlook Plug-In settings.
Proxy
- If you connect to the Internet via a Proxy and the proxy requires authentication (i.e. a username and password) you will not be able to use the SmartSimple Outlook plug-in. The plug-in requires access to the Internet, but does not have access to the proxy authentication settings that are stored in your Internet browser (such as Internet Explorer or Firefox)
- Errors in the Event Viewer with messages such as Proxy Authentication Required suggest the above issue may be present.
- Your company's network administrator may be able to add an exception to the proxy server to allow traffic to the SmartSimple server without authenticating to the proxy server.
